The\u00a0Kalmar Nyckel\u00a0<\/i>was a Dutch-built, armed merchant ship, famed for carrying Swedish settlers to\u00a0North America\u00a0in 1638 to establish the colony of\u00a0New Sweden. In 1986, a group of citizens established the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation and designed, built, and launched a replica of the\u00a0Kalmar Nyckel<\/i>.\u00a0 The new\u00a0ship\u00a0sails daily from April to November, voyaging over 3,000 nautical miles each year.\u00a0 She sails from her home port in Wilmington, her second port in Lewes, Delaware<\/a>, and visits ports-of-call along the Eastern Seaboard from Virginia to New England.\u00a0 The present-day\u00a0Kalmar Nyckel\u00a0<\/i>serves as a floating classroom and inspirational centerpiece for the Foundation\u2019s award-winning\u00a0educational programs, engaging students of all ages and stimulating them to learn more about Delaware\u2019s rich maritime and colonial history.\u00a0(<\/i>Source: Kalmar Nyckel Foundation)<\/i><\/p>\n
