In the fall of 2004, a beach replenishment project along the Delaware Bay pumped tons of sand onto Lewes Beach. What no one knew at the time was that this sand was peppered with artifacts from a previously unknown shipwreck.\u00a0\u00a0 Historical data, archaeological evidence, and the geographic location of the shipwreck suggest that the vessel is a British merchant ship that ran aground during a nor\u2019easter, near present-day Roosevelt Inlet in 1774.<\/p>\n

Beachcombers have found upwards of 56,000 artifacts such as glass shards, ceramic fragments, bottles, shoe buckles, rifle trigger guards, tobacco pipes, plates, spoons, military miniatures and wide-mouth storage jars and donated them to the Delaware Department of State. A large selection of those artifacts recovered from the Roosevelt Inlet Shipwreck site are on display at the Zwaanendael Museum in downtown Lewes.\u00a0 (Source: State of Delaware)<\/i><\/p>\n
