Silver Lake, Lake Gerar and Lake Comegys are three unique freshwater lakes, located only blocks to the Atlantic Ocean in Rehoboth Beach.\u00a0 They were formed by the flow of melting glaciers during the last Ice Age.\u00a0 The ocean once covered these lakes until it receded to its current position.<\/p>\n

Macdonald, the lakes in Rehoboth were convenient sources to collect fresh water before heading out to the ocean; settlers tried several times to prevent pirates from doing so by sending armed men to chase them off.\u00a0 Before the production of manufactured ice, local farmers would cut blocks of ice from these lakes in the winter, to keep their food from spoiling.<\/p>\n
