On the corner of Kings Highway and Savannah Road is a local iconic structure that was constructed to honor Delaware\u2019s first European settlement in 1631, the Zwaanendael Colony.\u00a0 The museum is modeled after the former city hall in Hoorn, the Netherlands, as it features Dutch elements like stepped fa\u00e7ade gable, terra cotta roof tiles and decorated shutters (photo supplied by Trip Advisor below).<\/p>\n

The top of building features a statue of David Pietersen de Vries, leader of the expedition that founded Zwaanendael.\u00a0 This name may also sound familiar to those who have traversed the town of Lewes as there is also de Vries Circle which is spelled \u201cDevries\u201d.<\/p>\n
